The Visa Balaji – Chilkur Balaji Temple

Finally we saw the Visa Balaji – Chilkur Balaji temple – The Visa Balaji

Image

Chilkur is a small village situated at a distance of 30 kilometers from Hyderabad city. I had heard a lot about it but had not visited the same. I often postpone visiting places as I reserve it for vacation so that both my mother and my nephew will be here and we can visit places along with them. But this time we had to hurry. The reason was my husband had to submit his Visa documents in three days. He has been working on it for months and still not able to complete the same, how can he do that in three days. But his manager asked him to hurry up. So there was no other way, than to take the help of Visa Balaji!

Yes, believe it or not, this Lord Venkateshwara at Chilkur Balaji temple is popularly known as Visa Balaji. All those aspiring to go abroad come here and take his blessings. During the first visit, they will offer 11 Rounds of Pradakshina ( Going around the God or the Temple for 11 times) . Then once their wish is fulfilled they have to come back and offer 108 rounds of PradakshiNa. If you are too lazy to offer the Pradakshina, and if you plan to offer only Dakshina the so called donation to temple in monetary form, this God will not accept.

Yes, the beauty of this place is

ü     it does not have Hundi, the box where devotees offer cash to God.

ü     Also it does not have separate queue system. All should go in only one line.

ü     When we do pradakshina, the Purohits stand their and they keep singing and make devotees sing.

So, coming back to our story, when my husband suddenly came and told me tomorrow we are going to Chilkur Balaji temple, I thought why tomorrow, how can Anagha (my small daughter) get up early? Why early? Why cannot we go afternoon?

He said, ‘No, I heard there will huge rush of devotees, if we can reach their by 7am, then it is ok, afterwards there will be huge crowd’. I said, ok, let us leave at 6.30 then.

We booked the taxi at 6.30 a.m, and it was 7.a.m by the time we left. I was just praying that, let there be not too much crowd, otherwise my husband would scold me for not leaving early!

But to our surprise there was not much vehicle movement in road. So our family friend Mr.Vasant, who accompanied us told, there might not be much crowd today as it is Ganesh Visarjan in Hyderabad. Otherwise by now, we should have come across lot of vehicles. So by God’s grace there was not much crowd when we reached temple. We took Coconut and flower to offer to the God. Mr.Vasant told, they will not accept anything. But the shopkeeper insisted. He told us, we will be allowed to Garbhagudi, the inside shrine where God’s Pooja takes place if we have that Tulasi garland!. We did not believe him, but still took the Tulasi leaves garland, coconut and flower garland. There was no queue at all and we reached the inside of temple very easily. But there were hundreds of people doing the Pradakshina. If on a un-croweded day there are so many people doing Pradakshina, you can imagine what will be the plight on other days, peak days and during afternoon hours.

We got to see the god from outside the shrine, not the inner shrine as told by flower shop keeper!. But Darshan was good. Here also they would ask us to move, but still we could fill our eyes with God’s beauty for atleast 30-40 seconds, as against Tirupati, where you get a glimpse only for fraction of second. After the Darshan and offering flowers, which were kept in the Tray there, we made 11 Pradakshina to God. Even my daughter happily joined us in the Pradakshina. Then we sat in the temple premises for a while as is the custom we follow. Then we had the darshan of Lord Shiva in the same temple.

It is said, in this temple you should not close your eyes in front of Shiva!

Then we had our breakfast at Harita restaurant, run by APTDC.  Did some shopping and returned home.

On the way back we stopped at Gandipet Dam and enjoyed the beauty of Water, then stopped at Durgam Cheruvu to get a glimpse of Biggest Ganesha Idol. Returned home before noon happily delighted and blessed!

Only washing No soaking

SOAK NO MORE, what a topic. From past few months this is the discussion I will have with housemaid.

Until KV started working as housemaid in our house I always kept the clothes in two baskets, one for the housemaid

and one for the washing machine. And it was our work to soak and put in washing machine. And often we would forget

to soak the clothes, so we will not put them in washing machine and it would pile up. When I say we, it refers to myself

and my husband. Both of us spend lot time in front of pc and still feel after becoming parents we are not finding time to

browse!! So forget about soaking clothes and putting them in washing machine. So finally when the clothes exceed the

capacity of the basket, and we start feeling I do not have anything proper to wear, that has gone for wash, this is not

there, then we feel it is emergency, and we put all clothes to washing machine without soaking. And as this has

continued for many years, our clothes are much dull compared to the clothes of my brother or mother, whom we often

visit or who visit us. When I see my brother’s baniyan and my husband banian next to each other on the string,

everybody can easily make out, which one is my brother’s and which is my husband’s!!

It is not that my brother is very active or hard working than us, the reason is he has mother with him :-), he has

maadevamma ( the maid from 20 years) soaking and washing his clothes regularly, mere paas kyaa hai? washing

machine hai!!!

‘unke paas washing machine nahi hai’ ( they do not have washing machine)

Then thanks to KV, the new maid to our house, she is more like a family friend than just a maid. The reason can be

she is watchman’s wife thus she is neighbour, employee of our apartment and my housemaid. So she would start

washing the clothes herself, after looking at them in basket for few days. Then I told her, its ok KV, you soak them, I

will put in washing machine. So she would soak it, and next day she would come and see it is still in bucket, then she

would put in washing machine. Next day she would come and see clothes are in washing machine, she would take

them out and put for drying.

Now everyday she teaches me, you should not soak for so many hours, it will smell, dont leave in washing machine for

so many hours, it will smell badly!! I know, I know, but I hardly get any time out of these contests, cooking and my

daughter, where is the time to remember I have to put clothes to washing machine!!!

Now it is really great news indeed!!, No soaking and only washing. That means, KV can directly put the clothes once

she comes to work, by the time she completes her other work like washing utensils, and mopping floor, the washing

machine would have washed the clothes, so she can put them for drying before she leaves!! No dull color, no smell, no

more lessons from KV!! Now I need not be afraid of maid, who would ask me everyday, you forgot to put it in washing

machine??

Sakkare Bylu (Elephant Camp) Shimoga

Sakkare bylu is a place situated in Shimoga District, Karnataka State which is in India.

Most part of Shimoga originally known as Shivamogga is covered by Forest area. Thus there is plenty of Greenery and wild life. Also the river Tunga flows elegantly through out the year. As such Shimoga has lots of Tourist spots but here I tell you about less known ‘Elephant camp’. The place is called Sakkare bylu. In the local language Kannada, Sakkare means Sugar. I believe there were Sugarcane fields nearby, and elephants came to eat them regularly, may be that is why they still come there today, and place is named ‘elephant camp’.

If you would like to visit Elephants you should be there by 8A.M and before 10a.m. The bathing process goes on from 8am till 10am. Then the elephants are fed breakfast. Their foreheads are smeared with Oil to keep them cool during summer. They were given Dry coconut, Banana and Hay as breakfast. You can also go for Boat ride in Tunga river.

I heard there will be elephant ride too, but on the day we went it was not available.

On the way back we visited Gajanur Dam, where a dam is constructed to Tunga river and water is used for agricultural purpose. There we played in the clean and cold water.

Here are some of the photos from our visit to Sakkare bylu.

sleep Right to avoid Heart Attack

Hi Friends one of my friends forwarded this mail to me. I am sharing the same with you, as it will help everyone.

WHY YOUNG & HEALTHY PEOPLE GET HEART ATTACK

Ranjan Das, CEO and MD of SAP Indian subcontinent died after a massive cardiac arrest in Mumbai. One of the youngest CEOs, he was just 42 year old

What killed Ranjan Das and Lessons for Corporate India

A few months ago, many of us heard about the sad demise of Ranjan Das from Bandra, Mumbai. He was very active in sports, was a fitness freak and a Marathon runner. It was common to see him run on Bandra’s Carter Road . Just after Diwali, he returned home from his gym after a workout, collapsed with a massive heart attack and died.

It was certainly a wake-up call for corporate India . However, it was even more disastrous for runners amongst us. Since Ranjan was an avid marathoner ( in Feb 09, he ran Chennai Marathon at the same time some of us were running Pondicherry Marathon 180 km away ), the question came as to why an exceptionally active, athletic person succumb to heart attack at 42

Years of age.

Was it the stress?

While Ranjan had mentioned that he faced a lot of stress, that is a common element in most of our lives. We used to think that by being fit, one can conquer the bad effects Of stress.

The Real Reason However, everyone missed out a small line in the reports That Ranjan used to make do with 4-5 hours of sleep. This is an earlier interview of Ranjan on NDTV In the program. Well-known cardiologist on the subject of ‘Heart Disease caused by Lack of Sleep’ have distilled the key points below in the hope it will save some of our lives.

Some Excerpts:

1. Short sleep duration ( <5 or 5-6 hours ) increased risk for high BP by 350% to 500% compared to those who slept longer than 6 hours per night.

2. Young people ( 25-49 years of age ) are twice as likely to get high BP If they sleep less.

3.  Individuals who slept less than 5 hours a night had a 3-fold increased Risk of heart attacks.

4.  Complete and partial lack of sleep increased the blood concentrations of High sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (hs-cRP), the strongest predictor of heart attacks. Even After getting adequate sleep later, the levels stayed high!!

5. Just one night of sleep loss increases very toxic substances in body Such as Interleukin-6 (IL! -6), Tumour Necrosis Factor-Alpha (TNF-alpha) and C-reactive protein (cRP). They increase risks of many medical conditions, including cancer, arthritis and heart disease.

6. Sleeping for <=5 hours per night leads to 39% increase in heart disease.

Sleeping for <=6 hours per night leads to 18% increase in heart disease.

Ideal Sleep

In brief, sleep is composed of two stages: REM ( Rapid Eye Movement ) and Non-REM. The former helps in mental consolidation while the latter helps in physical repair and Rebuilding. During the night, you alternate between REM and non-REM stages 4-5 times.

The earlier part of sleep is mostly non-REM. During that period, your pituitary gland releases growth hormones that repair your body. The latter part of sleep is more and more REM type.

For us to be mentally alert during the day, the latter part of sleep is more important. No wonder when you wake up with an alarm clock after 5-6 hours of sleep, you are mentally irritable throughout the day (lack of REM sleep). And if you have slept for less than 5 hours, your body is in a complete physical mess ( lack of non-REM sleep ), you are tired Throughout the day, moving like a zombie and your immunity is way down.

Finally, as long-distance runners, you need an hour of extra sleep to repair the running related damage.

In conclusion:

Barring stress control, Ranjan Das did everything right: eating proper Food, exercising ( marathoning! ), maintaining proper weight. But he missed getting proper and Adequate sleep, minimum 8 hours. In our opinion, that killed him.

If you are not getting enough sleep ( 8 hours ), you are playing with fire, even if you have low stress.

Unfortunately, Ranjan Das is not alone when it comes to missing sleep. Many of us are doing exactly the same, perhaps out of ignorance. Please forward this mail to Your colleagues/friends as possible, especially those who might be Short-changing their sleep. If we can save even one young Life because of this email, we would be very happy.

NUMAISH EXHIBITION

NUMAISH is a consumer products exhibition held in Nampally, Hyderabad every year. This held during the months of Jan – February every year. Its usually for 46 days. The exhibition offers you wide range of products like Jewellery, Dress Materials, Indian traditional clothing, carpets, curtains, Kitchenware, Electronic appliances, Herbal medicines and what not. You think of an item and it is available at Numaish.

You need not worry about food as the exhibition has wide range of food stalls which would satisfy every palate. South Indian, North Indian, chat items, Ice creams, everything is there.

Kids and elders can enjoy the Toy train ride in the exhibition. This service starts at 5pm. It is better to go for this ride as it will take you around the exhibition. This way you can know what all stalls are there, and how much you have to walk if you want to cover all the stalls.

As the exhibition starts at 4pm and will open till 9.30pm. And I would advice you to plan properly and visit those shops which are very unique like the Kashmiri hand-loom, Jaipur bangles etc, which you would not get outside in regular shops. Because if you spend more time in buying regular items, you may not find time to visit this explicit shops and thus you would miss the advantage of visiting this Exhibition.

It will be a good idea to only glance through all shops quickly on the first visit and make list of ‘MUST VISIT STALLS’ and go them directly in your next visit. This is because the exhibition opens at 4pm and you cannot cover all the shops in one day’s visit.

There are a lot of sweet stalls and small vendors even at the entrance of the exhibition, you can have a look at these things once you come out of exhibition.

Some of the items I bought at this exhibition are

Jute mat to keep hot items on dining table –

Jaipur bangles – Price ranges from Rupees 40 per set to 100 per set

bangles with stone work – Rs 320

Whether you want to do shopping or not, visit this exhibition once as it is a  treat to the eyes.

If you are going with small kids, please do hold their hands always, as the place is quite crowded.

You can have look at the video I did while riding the Toy Train here at this link
