Dengue Discussions

Dear Friends,

few days back I had posted a discussion thread about Dengue in Bangaloredengue. Here is the summary of the discussion. Also click this link which gives you detailed information about causes, symptoms and precautions to be taken.

Please contact doctor if you ever doubt you are feeling ill. This post is just to alarm you about Dengue and request you to take all measures to keep your family safe.

Causes

  1. Lot of people use a plate under the flower pot to prevent water from leaking and soiling of floor. It is a clean water source best for dengue mosquitoes. They also showed me new eggs ready to become lethal dengue mosquitoes. Place was quickly fumigated. Some other places that they looked for:
  2. A little bit of water leftover in a mug/bucket etc for days
  3. Little bit of rain water that gets stuck near slider doors etc
  4. Basically, any clean source of static water kept for days is what dengue mosquito loves.
  5. If you are working from home, you are at higher risk as dengue mosquitoes are found during day time.

Precautions

  1. Start using mosquito repellants during day time also as Dengue causing mosquitoes are active during day time
  2. You have to put a drop of Citronella Oil in each room of your house to ward off mosquitoes.
  3. Remove all source of stagnant water where mosquitoes can breed

Hospitals in Bangalore

  1. the hospitals should have platelet separation facility
  2. Fortis Bannerghatta Road has this facility.
  3. Manipal Hospital – Dr.Col Holla
  4. Rotary blood bank, Thippasandra
  5. Columbia Asia Yashwantpur has this facility
  6. Columbia Asia Hebbal does not have platelet separation facility

Symptoms

  • High fever, intense head ache, pain behind eyes, muscle and joint pain, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rashes
  • If the platelet count shows a trend of falling rapidly, please do not delay admitting in a hospital, preferably a hospital with a blood bank attached. Though I am not a doctor, but as a matter of caution also keep a check on Creatinine level in the Kidneys and SPGO  and SPGT  ( liver function tests) enzyme levels. In my friend’s case these enzyme levels had gone up to 16,000 as against a upper limit of 65 and 40.
  • Adequate hydration of the patient is the key to recovery.

blood

    • It is correct that for platelets, the type of blood group is immaterial. Any group donor can give blood to the Blood Bank except persons who have diabetes or any other chronic disease. The Bank extracts platelets form the blood and the platelets are transfused to the patient.
    • Platelet count is important if it is going to sub 15000 range (Sub 10000 mark, internal body bleeding and organ failures start). That is why doctors ask to donate platelet for emergency purposes. Hence should be monitored cautiously.

Dengue in Bangalore… Dont take it easy.. Here is a helpful discussion

We have seen 2 deaths in our known circle due to Dengue fever in recent past. I thought prevention knowledge needs to be shared.
This article is quite useful.
Best regards

Who was the second casualty?
Wife of our General Manager is right now down from dengue. Her platelet count is still high and the doctors are not admitting her into the hospital. Anxious days
Platelet count being high is no indication that all is well. When we detected Dengue in my daughter on a Saturday, her platelet count was 2.99 lakhs against a range of 1.5 – 4.5 lakhs. By Monday it was down to 1.5 lakhs and Tuesday it was 60,000.

When the count starts falling, it can fall exponentially. Pls tell your GM to keep a check on the count on a daily basis.
If the count shows a trend of falling rapidly, please do not delay admitting in a hospital, preferably a hospital with a blood bank attached. Though I am not a doctor, but as a matter of caution also keep a check on Creatinine level in the Kidneys and SPGO  and SPGT  ( liver function tests) enzyme levels. In my daughter’s case these enzyme levels had gone upto 16,000 as against a upper limit of 65 and 40.

This dangerous levels happen in the case of Dengue Shock Syndrome.

Please take care.

Regards

1) Platelet count goes down rapidly and below 40-50K it requires hospitalisation.

2) Fresh Papaya leaves juice couple of times in a day helps a lot in maintaining count.

Regards

My GM’s wife had high fever of 104 till yesterday, but fever level has dropped to 101 today, but her nausea and vomiting continues.
My son tells me the patient needs to be admitted to a hospital which has facility for separation of platelets from blood and not just a blood bank. He says there are just 2-3 hospitals in Bangalore. Is this correct?
—————
My son (6 years at that time) had dengue last year. He got treatment at manipal . manipal should have this facility .
———————————–
Dear Kiran Sir,
Fortis Bannerghatta Road has this facility.
Pl have checked with them on phone for more details.
—————————————
Rotary Blood Bank in thippasandra Manipal Hospital and I am sure Columbia Asia also must be having it
————————————–
She has been admitted to Columbia Asia Hebbal. Needs B+ blood. Hospital does not have platelet separation facility, so donor has to go to Yeshwanthpur facility. We have organized 4 donors so far. One doctor friend suggested blood group does not matter for platelet donation. If that is correct, we will organise more donors.
Keeping fingers crossed for her quick recovery.
——————————————————————————————-
Similar was the case with my wife couple of years back and she was admitted to Columbia Asia,Hebbal. Her platelet was about 30000 and was asked to arrange for platelets. But fortunately she started recovering and the next platelet count started showing improvements. Its the matter of time as well when the body starts gaining immunity.
——————————————————–

1) platlet transfusion is not required until this goes to severe, below 10K. They keep it for emergency purposes.

2) Any group platelet can be donated will be exchanged by the hospital.

3) Interesting that Bangalore has so less hospital for Dengue. In Mumbai most of the hospital you get that treatment.

—————————–

One of my colleague  got Dengue recently. He was admitted to Manipal initially but after two days he got shifted to Fortis because of bad service of Manipal. His platelet count has gone down to 20k, and was not increasing even after his temperature had gone down, so, he was given steroids. Because of steroids his platelet count started increasing, and he is fine now, although a little weak.

——————————–

This was a most illuminating discussion and I am sure will come in very useful to us all in times of such distress.

On behalf of all, I will like to personally thank all the contributor on the thread: we now do know a lot about dengue, its treatment and even the ‘go-to” hospitals for good Dengue treatment.
Now that a lot has been learnt about the Hospital facilities, I want to know about removing those breeding spots around my home..
Can some one please suggest if I cannot dry the water fountain as its part of a terrace garden water body, what is the best way to kill possibilities of that waterbody becoming a breeding ground, oops pool? – Pour phynyle? or keroscene or Hit.? Any easily available chemicals? – I’ve seen Delhi MCD distributing some white powder, to pour in water coolers and drains, but have no clue what that is and will appreciate suggestions .

————————————————-
Hi,

I had dengue 4 years back and platlet count went below 10000 and i was admitted in Manipal hospital under Dr Col Holla. I needed two rounds of platlet transfusion. During those four days. i was happy feeding on new platlets but my wife/family and friends did have to face lot of anxious moments. My platlet count started improving after 2nd round and was discharged after 4 days. Dengue causes lot of weakness for over a month and you need to take utmost care during that period.
After i came back from hospital, folks from national health department came and surveyed my house to identify the source. Live breeding ground of dengue mosquitoes was traced to a set of flower pots put by my neighbour just outside the gate. Lot of people use a plate under the flower pot to prevent water from leaking and soiling of floor. It is a clean water source best for dengue mosquitoes. They also showed me new eggs ready to become lethal dengue mosquitoes. Place was quickly fumigated. Some other places that they looked for:
– A little bit of water leftover in a mug/bucket etc for days
– Little bit of rain water that gets stuck near slider doors etc
Basically, any clean source of static water kept for days is what dengue mosquito loves. If you are working from home, you are at higher risk as dengue mosquitoes are found during day time.
From then on, mosquito coil/all outs are more used during day in my house.

Does anyone have contact in Columbia Asia Hebbal? The doctor attending to the patient has been casual and not helping the anxious family. Also the hospital does not have platelet separation facility which has to be organized at their Yeshwanthpur hospital. The platelet count has dropped to 26000 and the hospital is rather unresponsive in taking proactive steps. The count had dropped from over 100000 last night to 26000 today noon.
Can anyone suggest a contact at this hospital to speed up action or even moving the patient to another better hospital?
Perhaps I am over-reacting but the family’s mental stress is bothering me.
—————————————–
I have written to Columbia Asia corporate team. Will let you know as soon as I hear from them.
—————————————–
The doctor has agreed to start platelet transfusion. We are rushing donors to Columbia Asia Yeshwanthpur for donation. The new count taken at 4 pm was 21000. The hospital also just assured us that they have alternate arrangements in case of emergency, whatever that means. We will in any case organise  blood even if it is not used ultimately.
I am worried if the procedure for her transfer to another hospital will be a long-drawn one.
————————————————

I just recovered from dengue, but fortunately stopped my platelet count dropping below 60K (I was in Fortis, Bannerghatta Road).

I can say this – detecting dengue early is very important, the earlier the better. One symptom, is feeling extreme weakness.

Episode 13 – Down the memory lane

Tawde sank into the chair exhausted. His conscious mind reminded him that he is getting himself to lot of trouble. But his heart went on convincing him that, what he is doing is right. He cannot let go of his only child, the fate has brought him in such a phase of life where in he has lost all his loved ones. The only person whom he can think of his own, with whom he can spend the rest of his life is his daughter. The daughter whom he said good bye a decade ago.

He was doing his BSc Honors at the university of Agra and that is where he met her. She was so beautiful and friendly. She was a Marathi and even Tawde hailed from Mumbai, that is how their friendship bloomed. They both were active members in the Maratha Mandal of university. Together they planned lot of events, they celebrated all festivals, the Maratha Mandal included faculty, students, and staff who knew Marathi. Some students joined the Mandal even though Marathi was not their mother-tongue as they wanted to enjoy the Maharastrian food during festivals. All the close friends teased them as Mr and Mrs Tawde, and she would blush. They completed their Honors and Tawde started his search for job. He was very eager to write civil services, he wanted to be an IPS officer but could not clear it. Also hailing from a middle class family he had to find one job to support his parents at home, who had to get his sister married. So in the next attempt when he  not make it to IPS but got selected for Inspector post he embraced it with whole heart. His love never interfered in his decisions. But pressure started increasing at her home about her marriage. That is the tragedy of Indian women. They never get so much time to shape their career as much time as a Man gets. The usual answer a girl gets from her parents is, first you get married, then you either continue your studies or you work, do anything at your husband’s place. But it was really a tough time to Tawde. Because he could not keep the proposal of marrying her in front of his parents. If he talks about his marriage before his sister gets married, he will sound too selfish, also considering the different caste of the girl, his parents would never oblige. Also it would make them difficult to find a bridegroom for his sister. But he did not want to lose his love at any cost. Without the consent of the boys side, it was difficult for the girl to convince her parents. So the they thought first they will go for register marriage then they will inform them. All is fair in Love and War. So they married, and it was not so easy for them to inform their parents about the same. She continued to live in her hostel and Tawde was posted to a different Town. Very soon Tawde’s wife gave birth to a baby girl. Without proper care, surviving on hostel food condition of mother was critical. The doctor could not save the mother.

Tawde was clueless. He was heartbroken, he didn’t knew what to do with the child. He could not take his baby to his home, he heard that another baby born to the lady in the next room could not survive. Because of his designation somehow managed to keep his baby in that baby’s place. He noted the names of the parents, Shekar Dutta and Tara!!

Very soon Tawde got a marriage proposal. He would have rejected it if not for the sake of his parents and his sister. A marriage offer which came to his sister demanded that if they are ready to marry their daughter in turn with Tawde, they would marry Tawde’s sister to their son. With passing years, Tawde’s parents really did not want to miss this proposal, they convinced Tawde to get married. And for Tawde, when his love of life had left him, he had no other option than to at least help his sister settle in life.

Being in the police department it was not difficult for him to keep a track on his daughter. Now he even knew her name is Roohi. He did not have much worries as he thought his daughter was in good hands and was leading a happy life.

But things turned more cruel in Tawde’s life. His wife was diagnosed with Cancer and God did not show mercy on Tawde. For the first time he felt he was an orphan in this big world. Even though he could keep himself busy during his work, spending time when there was no work became a torture to him. The empty home, the quite rooms, the silent kitchen all laughed at him. On one such night he told himself ‘ No I am not alone, I am not alone, I have a daughter. I have a daughter!!!’

And that is when he decided to get his daughter back. And he used all his criminal knowledge, police power to get it done. But he was aghast when Jenny came and started interrogating him. He could not understand who betrayed him, he had hardly let the secret out. Did she really get any clue or is she just confusing me so that she will find me guilty?? No, I should not show any sign of shock on my face. And why should I, after all I am just trying to get my daughter back with me.

————————————— ***——————————————-

Vijay was horrified to hear the role of Inspector Tawde in Roohi’s kidnap. He just couldn’t believe what Jenny told. How could it be? He regarded him with so much respect. In fact Inspector Tawde had shown so much concern for kids who were kidnapped. He spoke so well about social system, and how every one needs to be socially responsible towards society. Can he be involved in child trafficking? What happened to Jennifer? Has she gone mad because of Cyrus’s condition? No Jennifer had her proof.

She showed Vijay the mail she got from Cyrus. Which had a link to a blog. In the blog they read a story which almost resembled all the characters that they knew. A husband and wife. A 9 year old daughter. Daughter is kidnapped. There is one Inspector. And in the story the Inspector was involved in the kidnap. It cannot be just a coincidence. And also in the story there is a neighbor who is friendly with the kid and he is also involved in the kidnap.!!

Introduction to Vastu

Vastu

Part 1

Vastu Shastra is believed to have originated from the stapadya veda of Atharvana Veda. As we are know there are four vedas, Rugveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda and Atharvana Veda. Rugveda consists of hymns which are nothing but prayers to god, Yajurveda explains the different rituals and procedures to be followed in them, Samaveda is the mother of music, the seven swaras sa, ri , ga , ma , pa , da , ni are derived from Samaveda and the last one Atharvana veda or Atharva veda as is widely known preaches non violence and peace.

Unfortunately we do not have access to complete vastu shastra, As we know vedas were taught orally by the Guru to his desciple and they were never recorded. It was a custom to remember it by heart and teach it. The main idea was to avoid theft! In future they might have written it, but because of the burning of Nalanda library we lost most of our treasured knowledge.house

So let us make most of the Vastu, that has been passed on from generations to generations.

Vastu tells us how to build our house, vastu tells the positive and negative energies a plot or construction will bring. How to rectify it. Just like one cannot prove the presence of god to atheist, and one should feel it to realise it, the same is true with Vastu. Once we learn Vastu, we can keep observing every house and the life of people living in it, and surprisingly you will see that things happen as per the belief of Vastu. Thus we should not take vastu lightly. Let us benefit from the wisdom our ancestors have given us.

Yudh Review

amitabh in yudhI would say the serial Yudh in Sony was a masterpiece in comparison to all other serials that are coming these days. Story is not very much new, but the characters the placing of different incidents kept the episodes so thrilling.

Should we ever mention the acting skills of Amitabh Bhachchan. But great people never become great by luck, its the hard work. The same is seen in Yudh also, I could see Bachchan sir in all new avtar, I could feel the emotion, the stress, the anxiety, the pain everything the character Yudh would undergo. I even doubted whether I had to check my BP after every episode.

Zakir hussain as Anand has acted so well that, I would say his acting is at par with Big B. Hats off to Zakir Hussain for his brilliant acting. The way he walks, his gestures his every action showed his loyalty towards his friend Yudh and how he would transform to be a good father when he is at his home with his son.anand-zakir

Role of Anand’s son has also come well. Anand’s wife’s character has come so well. I have to find her name.

Though Sarika playing the role of Yudh’s first wife did not appear in much of the scenes, still she did make a difference.

Everyone has done justice to their role.

anand wife yudh

The credit should go to story writer, director and editor equally. Because there is so much of chaos in the story that without proper editing the whole serial would lose its identity.

So many new concepts are introduced. Guiding Dr.Taruni through online video and someone disconnecting the net, shows the reality that its too early to adopt technology for such serious situations.

Overall I thank Sony TV, Anurag Kashyap producer Ramesh for giving us such a good Entertaining psychological thriller.

Will TV become Obsolete?

With TV becoming boring day by day, because of unlimited ads and invisible programs the only medium of entertainment left to most of us is Internet. Not that internet is free from ads. But the only difference is you can skip some ads after few seconds, you can open another browser and keep doing something until this ad gets over. When the serial we are watching gets boring, we can just fast forward it. Thus now I have come to the conclusion that Internet specially YouTube is my favorite channel to watch movies and serials.

Thanks to YouTube I got long forgotten Japanese serial Oshin with English subtitles. I watched all episodes of Yudh in one or two weeks. And because we can watch it any time we want, I make sure to watch interesting serials like Yudh and Oshin with my husband while having dinner or after our daughter sleeps. So our daughter can never complain, even you watch TV!!

And YouTube has few interesting adds like the latest one ‘free charge’

What would I have done without Internet when my feet got fractured and am asked to take bed rest. Thanks to internet and YouTube again. Of course without Internet I would have finished reading some of the pending books, but you cannot do that lying down as holding book requires some energy!

So the laptop becomes radio when I wash utensils, It becomes my TV when I am cutting vegetables, it becomes my class room when I want to learn something new, It becomes my newspaper, it is my dictionary, its everything.

I do hope the Television industry realizes soon that they cannot fool people forever. Otherwise TV has to bid goodbye like the radio.
