K B Prasanna Kumar is contesting the 2013 Legislative Elections from Shimoga and representing Congress Party.

Here is a snapshot of his profile.

Personal Life

Mr. K B Prasanna Kumar was born on 17th November 1968. His father’s name is G.V.Krishnamurty and Mother’s name is Smt Bhagirathi Bai.  He did his education from Deshiya Vidya Shala, Shimoga popularly known as DVS.

Since childhood Prasanna Kumar was hyperactive and hardworking. As he lost his father at a very young age, he started working part time to support his family. Later he worked as Contractor and is a Class 1 PWD contractor.

He married Geethanjali in the year 1998 and is having a son Avinash.

Professional Background.

By nature he is courageous and helping. As he comes from a humble background, he can understand the needs of the less privileged group of society. Thus even before he got into Politics he was actively involved in Social Service. He joined Youth Congress at the young age of 20, and has engaged himself in all social developmental activities since then. Thus he is having a rich experience of serving people for more than two decades.

As a mirror to all his hard work, he easily won the City Municipal Elections, in the very first attempt in 2007, representing Ashokanagar Ward, Shimoga, and Karnataka State. Since then he has not left any stone unturned. He has immensely helped the people of his Ashok Nagar ward in all respects.

In his five years of service as Counsillor of Ashok nagar he has done his best to solve the problems of common people.

Some of the works he has done are as under

  1. He has solved the drinking water problem of Ashoknagar ward, Shimoga.
  2. He has arranged for 25 mini water tankers.
  3. He has got street lights fixed at all roads of Ashokanagar, that’s why this ward got the name – ‘ward of lights’
  4. Garbage maintenance was successfully implemented.
  5. SC/STs, and BPL Card holders were made to avail the benefits of all Government sponsored schemes like
    1. Free Electricity
    2. Access to Toilets
    3. Free Cycle for students
    4. Tailoring machine for women
    5. Grinders
    6. Computers and many more
    7. Scholarships for students through Government Municipal office were distributed
    8. Every morning from 5.30am till late in the night, people of Ashokanagar approach him for any grievances they have.

If you sit and watch him from morning till evening, you can observe that, he is not only working as Municipal Councilor but is also has to act as Family counselor for various problems of the poor. Thus he is affectionately called as ‘Anna’ means brother by the Ashoknagar ward people.

Owing to his success as a great brand ambassador of Congress, various other political parties did force him to join hands with them. But his devotion to Congress party and determination to help the poor and needy, and the secular mindset, never made him jump from one party to other.

Thus in the 2012-13 elections for City Municipal councilor, Prasanna Kumar won by 2536 votes as against the number of votes that were cast was 3737. The opposite candidates lost the deposit amount as they could not gain minimum number of votes required. This shows how much of popularity he has got by his hard work.

Various Positions held by K B Prasanna Kumar

  1.  City Municipal Councillor, Shimoga
  2. President, Shimoga city congress (South Block)
  3. President, Vishweshwaraiah Co-Operative Society, (Brahmin Community) Shimoga.

The Visa Balaji – Chilkur Balaji Temple

Finally we saw the Visa Balaji – Chilkur Balaji temple – The Visa Balaji

Image

Chilkur is a small village situated at a distance of 30 kilometers from Hyderabad city. I had heard a lot about it but had not visited the same. I often postpone visiting places as I reserve it for vacation so that both my mother and my nephew will be here and we can visit places along with them. But this time we had to hurry. The reason was my husband had to submit his Visa documents in three days. He has been working on it for months and still not able to complete the same, how can he do that in three days. But his manager asked him to hurry up. So there was no other way, than to take the help of Visa Balaji!

Yes, believe it or not, this Lord Venkateshwara at Chilkur Balaji temple is popularly known as Visa Balaji. All those aspiring to go abroad come here and take his blessings. During the first visit, they will offer 11 Rounds of Pradakshina ( Going around the God or the Temple for 11 times) . Then once their wish is fulfilled they have to come back and offer 108 rounds of PradakshiNa. If you are too lazy to offer the Pradakshina, and if you plan to offer only Dakshina the so called donation to temple in monetary form, this God will not accept.

Yes, the beauty of this place is

ü     it does not have Hundi, the box where devotees offer cash to God.

ü     Also it does not have separate queue system. All should go in only one line.

ü     When we do pradakshina, the Purohits stand their and they keep singing and make devotees sing.

So, coming back to our story, when my husband suddenly came and told me tomorrow we are going to Chilkur Balaji temple, I thought why tomorrow, how can Anagha (my small daughter) get up early? Why early? Why cannot we go afternoon?

He said, ‘No, I heard there will huge rush of devotees, if we can reach their by 7am, then it is ok, afterwards there will be huge crowd’. I said, ok, let us leave at 6.30 then.

We booked the taxi at 6.30 a.m, and it was 7.a.m by the time we left. I was just praying that, let there be not too much crowd, otherwise my husband would scold me for not leaving early!

But to our surprise there was not much vehicle movement in road. So our family friend Mr.Vasant, who accompanied us told, there might not be much crowd today as it is Ganesh Visarjan in Hyderabad. Otherwise by now, we should have come across lot of vehicles. So by God’s grace there was not much crowd when we reached temple. We took Coconut and flower to offer to the God. Mr.Vasant told, they will not accept anything. But the shopkeeper insisted. He told us, we will be allowed to Garbhagudi, the inside shrine where God’s Pooja takes place if we have that Tulasi garland!. We did not believe him, but still took the Tulasi leaves garland, coconut and flower garland. There was no queue at all and we reached the inside of temple very easily. But there were hundreds of people doing the Pradakshina. If on a un-croweded day there are so many people doing Pradakshina, you can imagine what will be the plight on other days, peak days and during afternoon hours.

We got to see the god from outside the shrine, not the inner shrine as told by flower shop keeper!. But Darshan was good. Here also they would ask us to move, but still we could fill our eyes with God’s beauty for atleast 30-40 seconds, as against Tirupati, where you get a glimpse only for fraction of second. After the Darshan and offering flowers, which were kept in the Tray there, we made 11 Pradakshina to God. Even my daughter happily joined us in the Pradakshina. Then we sat in the temple premises for a while as is the custom we follow. Then we had the darshan of Lord Shiva in the same temple.

It is said, in this temple you should not close your eyes in front of Shiva!

Image

Then we had our breakfast at Harita restaurant, run by APTDC.  Did some shopping and returned home.

On the way back we stopped at Gandipet Dam and enjoyed the beauty of Water, then stopped at Durgam Cheruvu to get a glimpse of Biggest Ganesha Idol. Returned home before noon happily delighted and blessed!

Only washing No soaking

SOAK NO MORE, what a topic. From past few months this is the discussion I will have with housemaid.

Until KV started working as housemaid in our house I always kept the clothes in two baskets, one for the housemaid

and one for the washing machine. And it was our work to soak and put in washing machine. And often we would forget

to soak the clothes, so we will not put them in washing machine and it would pile up. When I say we, it refers to myself

and my husband. Both of us spend lot time in front of pc and still feel after becoming parents we are not finding time to

browse!! So forget about soaking clothes and putting them in washing machine. So finally when the clothes exceed the

capacity of the basket, and we start feeling I do not have anything proper to wear, that has gone for wash, this is not

there, then we feel it is emergency, and we put all clothes to washing machine without soaking. And as this has

continued for many years, our clothes are much dull compared to the clothes of my brother or mother, whom we often

visit or who visit us. When I see my brother’s baniyan and my husband banian next to each other on the string,

everybody can easily make out, which one is my brother’s and which is my husband’s!!

It is not that my brother is very active or hard working than us, the reason is he has mother with him :-), he has

maadevamma ( the maid from 20 years) soaking and washing his clothes regularly, mere paas kyaa hai? washing

machine hai!!!

‘unke paas washing machine nahi hai’ ( they do not have washing machine)

Then thanks to KV, the new maid to our house, she is more like a family friend than just a maid. The reason can be

she is watchman’s wife thus she is neighbour, employee of our apartment and my housemaid. So she would start

washing the clothes herself, after looking at them in basket for few days. Then I told her, its ok KV, you soak them, I

will put in washing machine. So she would soak it, and next day she would come and see it is still in bucket, then she

would put in washing machine. Next day she would come and see clothes are in washing machine, she would take

them out and put for drying.

Now everyday she teaches me, you should not soak for so many hours, it will smell, dont leave in washing machine for

so many hours, it will smell badly!! I know, I know, but I hardly get any time out of these contests, cooking and my

daughter, where is the time to remember I have to put clothes to washing machine!!!

Now it is really great news indeed!!, No soaking and only washing. That means, KV can directly put the clothes once

she comes to work, by the time she completes her other work like washing utensils, and mopping floor, the washing

machine would have washed the clothes, so she can put them for drying before she leaves!! No dull color, no smell, no

more lessons from KV!! Now I need not be afraid of maid, who would ask me everyday, you forgot to put it in washing

machine??

NUMAISH EXHIBITION

NUMAISH is a consumer products exhibition held in Nampally, Hyderabad every year. This held during the months of Jan – February every year. Its usually for 46 days. The exhibition offers you wide range of products like Jewellery, Dress Materials, Indian traditional clothing, carpets, curtains, Kitchenware, Electronic appliances, Herbal medicines and what not. You think of an item and it is available at Numaish.

You need not worry about food as the exhibition has wide range of food stalls which would satisfy every palate. South Indian, North Indian, chat items, Ice creams, everything is there.

Kids and elders can enjoy the Toy train ride in the exhibition. This service starts at 5pm. It is better to go for this ride as it will take you around the exhibition. This way you can know what all stalls are there, and how much you have to walk if you want to cover all the stalls.

As the exhibition starts at 4pm and will open till 9.30pm. And I would advice you to plan properly and visit those shops which are very unique like the Kashmiri hand-loom, Jaipur bangles etc, which you would not get outside in regular shops. Because if you spend more time in buying regular items, you may not find time to visit this explicit shops and thus you would miss the advantage of visiting this Exhibition.

It will be a good idea to only glance through all shops quickly on the first visit and make list of ‘MUST VISIT STALLS’ and go them directly in your next visit. This is because the exhibition opens at 4pm and you cannot cover all the shops in one day’s visit.

There are a lot of sweet stalls and small vendors even at the entrance of the exhibition, you can have a look at these things once you come out of exhibition.

Some of the items I bought at this exhibition are

Jute mat to keep hot items on dining table –

Jaipur bangles – Price ranges from Rupees 40 per set to 100 per set

bangles with stone work – Rs 320

Whether you want to do shopping or not, visit this exhibition once as it is a  treat to the eyes.

If you are going with small kids, please do hold their hands always, as the place is quite crowded.

You can have look at the video I did while riding the Toy Train here at this link

Muruganandam’s Invention helps the poor

Image

We often read about people who think out of the box and create jobs for the poor, help the society. Most often these people are from the not so educated backgrounds. Here is Mr.Muruganandam who left his studies at 10th Standard, and started working. He has come up with low cost sanitary napkins. Not only that he invented cheaper way to make hygienic product, he has trained women in rural areas and made them run their own units.

You can know more about his Industry and product here ‘Jayaashree Industries’

I often wonder when people like Muruganandam can contribute so much to the society, why we with double degrees, keeping searching for jobs in Naukri and Ascent??

Neighbor’s TV Volume

ImageIt is three years since we came to Hyderabad, and one thing I have understood is Telugu people have more passion for movies than Kannadigas. One of my neighbor would regularly watch movies in theatre even though she had a small daughter of the same age as of my daughter. Me on the other hand never went to Theatre to watch movie after Anagha’s birth, almost until she was four years old. I always thought it would be difficult to manage her in the theater or three hours. But this neighbor of mine told, her daughter also likes watching movies, else she will sleep. Anyway I did not have any trouble with Telugu people’s addiction to movies until we moved to first floor in our apartment. We were staying in second floor during first year of our stay in Hyderabad, and the house above ours was not yet occupied. So we never had any disturbance from the flat above. But when we moved to first floor, we started hearing lot of noises during night, from the house above. It sounded like moving the furniture, sometimes things falling down. We always wondered why they make so much noise. We could even hear the sound of opening and closing of wardrobe doors! We always wondered when we stayed in second floor, were they hearing the same amount of noise from our house.

But later we found that they started watching movies every Saturday night, with full volume. This was kind of ritual for them. One Saturday I found it too disturbing, my daughter was not well, and could not sleep because of the noise. Also like most of the Telugu movies, this had lot of Fighting, songs, loud dialogues. We could hear all that. I thought, its 10pm, lets wait, may be it will end. No it did not. 11pm, 12 midnight, the movie continued. We could not tolerate it longer, went to out to check if the sound is definitely from the house above ours or others, after feeling it is from the house above, my husband went and knocked the door, nobody opened. I asked him to press the calling bell. He said, no, their little son might be sleeping, why should we disturb!!

Fine, what do we do now? I asked do you have his phone number? He said yes, ok call him and tell. Then he called him and asked him to reduce the volume. He felt very sorry, and I think he switched off the TV or DVD what ever. After that we never heard the movie sound in the night. Either he missed it because of us, or might have shifted to headphones.

Now they relocated to other city, and we have a new neighbor staying in the house above. We have not yet met them yet. And one day suddenly at midnight, I started hearing TV sound. Sounded like a movie with ghosts or Rakshas of old movie types. The Rakshas would laugh quite often. I thought what kind of movie is this? I could not understand the language either. I waited for half an hour or so, then I got up. I thought of waking up my husband, then I thought, forget it, let me go and talk to them. I opened the door of our bedroom, and found that our TV is ON!!

The program was comedy circus in sony tv. And the laughter I heard was that of Archana!!

I thought how could this happen? Was my husband watching TV and slept without switching it off? No, the lights are off. Then I realized our TV was not working from evening, we tried pressing its power on button so many times, and left it. And suddenly it had become ON. I switched off the TV immediately, and thought how much the sound might have disturbed others!!!

Preparing the child for the School

Image

Each one of us, except a few find it difficult to make their kids adjust to the school in the initial phases. My daughter went to play school only until I accompanied her and after that I could see that she has been crying a lot and I stopped sending her. Where as a neighboring girl six months elder to my daughter never had any problem from day one! At that time I felt the reason might be our language. We speak in Kannada at home and had moved to Hyderabad just one year back. But later I found that is not the reason for her discomfort. When I put her to Nursery in Bachpan a year later, she adjusted within a week and though she hesitated in the initial weeks, later she went without much problem. By the time she came to LKG, I put her in Laurus and she went for only two days and refused to go. Then I put her back in Bachpan and she started going happily from Day one, and the timings were 9 to 2pm. Few kids go happily from day one and few don’t, so what do we do about it.

Let me share you my experience, my effort in making her feel secure outside the home. First of all take your kids to your neighbor’s house, stay there for some time. I know it’s a boring exercise, but we need to do it. I have often seen parents asking kids to play by themselves and would not like to stay in neighbor’s house for more than ten minutes. So staying in an apartment was a blessing for me. To add to that we have kids of all age groups in our apartment. She would spend lot of time with her two friends who were of the same age. Initially I would always sit with her for 10 to 15 minutes while she is playing. Then I would come home for few minutes, would go back if she cried. Then I would stay with her for long next time. Like this it went on for few months. Later she started going to these friends house all by herself and would tell me not to accompany her. You just need to make them feel safe there by going with them every time or every day for half an hour or so. After few days they become familiar with everybody in the other house and feel safe. It also gives you an opportunity to understand your neighbor, and how good is their company for your kid. So by the age of 2 and ½ years my daughter was comfortably playing in her friend’s homes. Sraddha’s house, Saanvika’s house and sometimes charisma’s house. She also picked good amount of Telugu.

I liked Bachpan, Nizampet as it has qualified teachers who are fluent in English. Also the Director Sravanti is an Engineer by education. I liked the study material, and it was definitely better option than Lilliput. I joined her in Nursery, and I took her to the school for 2 -3 days before the school reopened. So that I could stay with her while she played in the play area. I made her feel comfortable in school. It was like a park or play house where her mother accompanied her, so she was happy to go. Also I got the uniform before the school actually started, made her wear the uniform and took her to school.

When the school actually began, the Director Sravanthi told us to keep our hearts strong and brave and to leave the kid even if he or she cries. And first week the school was only for half an hour! So first week all  Nursery kids went for half an hour, though my daughter cried on first day, she didn’t cry the other days, because she thought it gets over so fast and it was fun! Next week the school was for three hours i.e. 9 to 12, but we brought her at 10.30 itself for one week. Later as she liked to come by Van with friends, we told her then you can come by Van. Coming by van meant staying till 12noon, which she did not realize.

She liked her class teacher very much. The class teacher was available to us over phone. So whenever she came home sad, I would call her and ask what happened, and she would explain. The class teacher Rama had very well understood the psychology of my child. I am sure she would have understood each child in the same way. My daughter enjoyed doing home work, as she felt it’s a matter of pride like other grown up kids. Now she too has got books and home work J

The school took them on outings once or twice. All festivals they celebrate with lot of enthusiasm. Friendship day, blue day, I day, all festivals so and so forth.  A dance teacher came to train them for the annual day function. My daughter’s song was ‘O My friend Ganesha’. She enjoyed that too. On the annual day we were supposed to send them at 8.30am, from school they would go to Auditorium, which was near hi Tech city. I was wondering whether she can manage. But to my astonishment she went happily, she was dressed up by her teachers, she did not cry on the stage.

Also at every point, I keep her informed what will happen. I will tell her, they will take you to auditorium from school; your teacher will dress you up. There will be lot of people in the auditorium. They will watch your dance and clap loudly if you dance well. So on and so forth.

She even went to wish the Governor of Andhrapradesh on Rakshabhandan with her school mates. That was again something which we doubted, but she surprised us by completing that assignment also without any crying or troubling teachers.

At the same time she could not adjust to Laurus School at all. I felt neither the teachers nor the ayahs were well trained to handle small kids.

To summarise I would tell that, it’s good to consult few parents and take their suggestion. Also every kid is different, depending on your kid’s upbringing you have to mentally prepare them for school. Never tell a kid that ‘if you don’t eat I will send you to school’ or never make statements like ‘teacher will beat you’.

Since they start walking and speaking, make them feel school is a good experience. Make them long for school. Whenever they tell I want to go to school, tell them you are too young, you should eat properly then we will send you to school. So that the child feels it’s something which it should earn, like he earns a chocolate for doing good things.

Don’t put them in school for three hours from day one. Convince the teachers and principal and leave them only for half an hour. If possible go with the kid to the school on non working days of school and spend some time there. Bring them back even when they want to play more. Put them in day care for only half an hour or one hour. Stay with them for first week, and then leave them for half an hour. For most of the kids it should be a gradual process. Don’t ask them to wear the uniform on day one, sometimes they don’t want to wear uniform because that means going to school. In that case forget about uniform, put the color dress and tell them you will just go enquire something at school. Talk about other kids coming to school. Tell them there will be birthday parties in school. If you attend school you will get more friends, you can attend more parties. I have put lot of effort to make my daughter feel comfortable at other’s houses, and school. One of my neighbor often tells me ‘hats off to you Bindu’.

Thus sharing my experiences. Hope it helps you.

Enjoy parenting.
