Plot Summary: Set in post-World War II America, “The Godfather” revolves around the powerful Corleone crime family, led by patriarch Vito Corleone, played by the legendary Marlon Brando. The story delves into the complexities of organized crime, power struggles, and the consequences of choosing a life of crime.

Key Themes:

  1. Family and Loyalty: At its core, “The Godfather” is a story about family. The Corleones, while deeply involved in illegal activities, prioritize loyalty and honor within their close-knit circle. The intricate dynamics of the family provide a rich backdrop for the narrative.
  2. Power and Corruption: The film explores the corrupting influence of power and the lengths individuals will go to maintain or expand their influence. Vito Corleone’s iconic line, “I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse,” epitomizes the manipulative power plays that drive the narrative.
  3. American Dream: “The Godfather” reflects on the immigrant experience in America and the pursuit of the American Dream. The Corleones, initially outsiders, navigate societal challenges and establish themselves as a formidable force, embodying the dark side of the American Dream.
  4. Cinematic Excellence: Francis Ford Coppola’s directorial prowess is evident in every frame of “The Godfather.” The film’s use of chiaroscuro lighting, memorable cinematography, and Nino Rota’s haunting score contribute to its status as a cinematic masterpiece.

Impact and Legacy: “The Godfather” not only received critical acclaim upon its release but also became a cultural phenomenon. It won three Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Marlon Brando. The film’s impact on popular culture is enduring, with iconic quotes, characters, and scenes referenced in various forms of media.

Sequels: The success of “The Godfather” led to two equally acclaimed sequels, “The Godfather Part II” (1974) and “The Godfather Part III” (1990). The sequels expanded upon the themes introduced in the original, further solidifying the trilogy’s place in cinematic history.

“The Godfather” features a stellar ensemble cast, and here are some of the main characters along with the actors who portrayed them:

  1. Vito Corleone (The Godfather) – Marlon Brando: Marlon Brando gives a legendary performance as Vito Corleone, the patriarch of the Corleone crime family. His portrayal earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor.
  2. Michael Corleone – Al Pacino: Al Pacino plays Michael Corleone, the youngest son of Vito, who initially seeks to distance himself from the family’s criminal enterprises but eventually becomes deeply involved in its operations.
  3. Sonny Corleone – James Caan: James Caan portrays Sonny Corleone, the hot-headed and impulsive eldest son of Vito. Sonny plays a crucial role in the family’s dynamics.
  4. Tom Hagen – Robert Duvall: Robert Duvall plays Tom Hagen, the Corleone family’s consigliere. Hagen, though not a blood relative, is considered part of the family and serves as Vito’s advisor.
  5. Fredo Corleone – John Cazale: John Cazale takes on the role of Fredo Corleone, the middle son of Vito. Fredo’s character undergoes significant development throughout the trilogy.
  6. Kay Adams – Diane Keaton: Diane Keaton portrays Kay Adams, Michael Corleone’s girlfriend and later wife. Kay becomes an integral part of the Corleone family’s story.
  7. Salvatore Tessio – Abe Vigoda: Abe Vigoda plays Salvatore Tessio, one of the Corleone family’s caporegimes (captains). Tessio is a loyal associate but becomes entangled in the power struggles within the family.
  8. Clemenza – Richard S. Castellano: Richard S. Castellano plays Clemenza, another caporegime within the Corleone family. Clemenza is known for his expertise in “making people disappear.”

Conclusion: “The Godfather” remains a cinematic tour de force, captivating audiences with its powerful storytelling, memorable characters, and exploration of profound themes. Its enduring legacy is a testament to the artistry of Francis Ford Coppola and the timeless relevance of a story that goes beyond the confines of the crime genre. As we revisit the Corleone saga, we continue to be enthralled by the cinematic brilliance of “The Godfather.”

Friday Movies – West Side Story

“West Side Story” is a classic musical that has captivated audiences for decades with its timeless story, powerful performances, and iconic music. Here are six surprising facts about “West Side Story”:

  1. Inspiration from Shakespeare: “West Side Story” is a modern adaptation of William Shakespeare’s play “Romeo and Juliet.” The musical transplants the tragic love story to the streets of New York City, with the warring families replaced by rival gangs, the Jets and the Sharks.
  2. Original Language Barrier: The character of Anita, portrayed by Rita Moreno in the original Broadway production and the 1961 film adaptation, faced an interesting language barrier. Moreno, a Puerto Rican actress, did not speak English fluently at the time of her audition. Despite this, her performance was so compelling that she earned the role and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
  3. Record-Breaking Oscar Win: The 1961 film adaptation of “West Side Story” made Oscar history by winning 10 Academy Awards. This includes Best Picture, Best Director for Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins (the first time the award was shared), and the aforementioned Best Supporting Actress for Rita Moreno.
  4. Choreography Challenges: The film’s choreography, created by Jerome Robbins, was known for its complexity and innovation. However, filming the dance sequences presented challenges. To achieve the desired shots, some scenes had to be shot at a slower frame rate and then sped up in post-production to match the music.
  5. Russ Tamblyn’s Unique Audition: Russ Tamblyn, who played Riff in the film, secured his role through a rather unconventional audition. Instead of performing a traditional scene, Tamblyn performed a gymnastics routine, showcasing his agility and physicality. This unique approach impressed the filmmakers and contributed to his casting.
  6. Ongoing Cultural Impact: “West Side Story” has had a lasting impact on popular culture. The musical’s songs, such as “Maria,” “Tonight,” and “Somewhere,” are widely recognized, and the story has been adapted into various forms over the years. In 2021, Steven Spielberg directed a new film adaptation, introducing the classic tale to a new generation.

Kathal – Movie on Netflix

I recently stumbled upon this movie Kathal on Netflix and was immediately drawn in by the intriguing trailer that accompanied the title. Eager to delve into it, I started watching and I must say, I was not disappointed. The film revolves around the theft of two unripe Jackfruits from an MLA’s house, prompting the police to embark on a mission to recover them. It’s safe to say that this movie falls under the genres of satire and dark comedy.

What amazed me was that my six-year-old son joined me in watching the film, and for him, it was simply a hilarious comedy packed with thrilling action. However, as an adult, I couldn’t help but appreciate the clever way the movie addressed various societal issues. It managed to touch upon these topics in a wise and thought-provoking manner.

If you have a spare two hours, I highly recommend giving this movie a watch. Whether you’re a fan of Indian cinema or simply curious about the realities of Indian police, villages, and families, this film offers a delightful and eye-opening experience. Prepare yourself for an entertaining ride that blends humor, social commentary, and a dash of action. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

Sanju Movie Review

Netflix does have many good movies and shows to watch. Recently I watched the hindi movie Sanju. Sometimes I wonder why do I choose serious topics even though the purpose of watching movies is for entertainment. But unfortunately movies without substance don’t really attract me. Now how do we decide whether a movie is good or bad. First and foremost I really dont have the patience to watch any average movie especially when I am in front of a smart TV where I can navigate from Netflix, to YouTube or YouTube to prime video and so on. Thus If I watched a movie in addition to taking care of my toddler son, then it means the movie is good! Thus Sanju comes in worth watching list.

There is a debate why do you have to make the movie of a Culprit, but you do have the famous ‘God Father’ that was also about the Underworld Dons. But here at least he is not underworld don, How an offspring of famous personalities becomes addicted to drug, still comes out of it and becomes successful actor but again the fate puts him in prison.

The things to take from this movie are

  •  His struggle to come out of addiction
  • lesson to all those who might fall into the trap of bad habits, bad company and addiction
  • lesson to parents to be there for their children in times of their emotional needs
  • message that do not blindly believe each and everything that’s propagated in social media.

some of the questions I have is

  •  if it’s a biography why there is no mention of his first and second wives
  •  where is his child hood?
  • was the honesty of sunil dutt the reason for him get arrested?

I guess Rajkumar Hirani can come with a TV Serial so that it can start from Nargis and Sunil dutt wedding to the present Sanjay dutt. Because I believe a lot of things during his childhood might have definitely affected him to fall into the trap of drug addiction.

Cooking Fever Review

I must have downloaded cooking fever almost six months back.  Me, My daughter and my little son all three of us enjoyed playing that game. I had finished all levels in bakery shop. Then I had bought Hell’s Kitchen and had completed 15 levels, I had bought sports bar also. Then while I was stuck at a level I just thought of buying the gems. I usually dont spend money on virtual games. The only time I spent on games was when I had bought virtual villagers. We own that game once we buy it, that was different.

So I decided to buy jewels, it said some jackpot for every 100th buyer. So I wanted to check my luck, and I bought the jewels using Microsoft store and the game got stuck there. The gems were not added, nothing happened. Then the game just shut down. I opened it many times, but the game would just open and screen would go off. I contacted Microsoft store. The agent said I can uninstall and install the game the gems will be there. He said it will sync to where you were in the game. I thought I can get gems buy I might not get the jackpot which every 100th buyer gets. So I uninstalled and installed the game but to my shock it started from beginning. No gems, no levels!!!!!

I contacted the nordcurrent support from the link which Microsoft agent gave and also link available on the game, but they said they will respond within two days and there is no response.

So I would not recommend this game, especially I would not recommend buying anything from Microsoft store because they dont take responsibility. I have not even got a follow up mail for the chat session I had with the Microsoft agent.

Do not blindly forward it…

Friends,

You have heard of grapevine, gossip and rumour right? And did you think you were not the one who would easily fall prey to those? If someone told the boss is having affair with his PA you are least bothered, If neighbor said the guy living upstairs might be a terrorist you did not blindly believe her. But now when it comes to internet you just forward each and everything thing which sounds interesting or never heard of.. right? why is it?

articles2read.com
articles2read.com

Some one forwarded a photo telling Congress is making a Yaga to invite aliens, everyone forwarded it in whatsApp and laughed at congress. But they never realized they were such big fools to believe the news.

Then there are many forwards which ask you to forward the message to ten people and you will get auto-recharge, or the picture will change, so on and so forth. I agree you want to test it, ok test it, but how many of you ever go back and send a message that it did not work? At least that way everybody realizes such things wont work.

The biggest fraud of all is forwards like ‘Telegram’ is an Indian messenger application and Modi asked to install it. How many so called software engineers forwarded it!! were you also one of them? You were rather marketing a foreign product which was not even as good and safe as whatsapp!!

Jokes making fun of women, and even women forward it!! I am sure now why the half of the world considers women as Dumb.

There is this video of a girl singing a nice Hindi Song. Neither the name of the girl, nor her city nor the senders information is there in the video. But everybody is requesting to forward that video telling it will help the girl get publicity. Now I wonder how many men with ill will approach her promising her of bright future and misuse her innocence!! If somebody really wanted to help, he or she would have given their contact details so that the people wanting to help would have had a point of contact.

Forwards like – Today you will see many moons, or there will be no light for 48 hours, sun will disappear etc are so hilarious. Whatsapp works on internet, Facebook works on internet why not just Google it out and confirm before forwarding?

Kids lost, or kids found, blood needed all these forwards have some good will behind them, but make sure to add some date, name of place etc so that when it goes on circulating around the world through out the year or years, someone will cross check and find out if its relevant or not and stop forwarding.

Friends forward a joke, forward inspirational quotes, forward all good things. Before you forward anything, just make sure the information you are sending to the world around there is true, helps someone and important of all does not harm anyone!!

Hanako Muraoka

I have talked about Hanako and Anne, the Japanese serial and Anne of Green Gables in my earlier post. Here is a biography of Hanako the Japanese to English Translator on whom the Japanese Drama Hanako and Anne was pictured and transmitted in NHK

https://www.lib.city.minato.tokyo.jp/yukari/e/man-detail.cgi?id=95

Hanako Muraoka

  • Biography
1893-1968. Translator and scholar of children’s literature. While studying waka poems as a student of Nobutsuna Sasaki and Japanese classics at Toyo EIwa Girl’s School, she began writing children’s stories with the encouragement of the poet and translator of Irish literature, Hiroko Katayama. After graduating from school and working as an English teacher and in a publishing house, she introduced much literature for all ages, such as The Christmas Carol, Anne of Green Gables, and A Dog of Flanders, after translating Mark Twain’s The Prince and the Pauper in 1927.

  • Association with Minato City
Childhood at Toyo Eiwa Girl’s School, which gave birth to Anne of Green Gables

Muraoka studied at the Toyo Eiwa Girl’s School, established by the female preacher of the Canadian Methodist Church (now United Church), Martha Cartmell, in Azabu Toriizaka. In her essay book Ikiru to iu koto, she presents her sensitive childhood, which is reminiscent of Anne of Green Gables in how she describes the atmospheric sight of the gas lamps when they were lit at dusk, and how she shared the large sweet she bought at a confectionery in Azabu Juban with her roommates.

Muraoka is known as a scholar of children’s literature by her translation of Anne of Green Gables, but she was in charge of the radio show Kodomo no Shimbun (Children’s Newspaper) on Tokyo Broadcasting Corporation (now NHK) in Mt. Atago, and she was also affectionately known as “Auntie Muraoka.” The show lasted from 1932 until the beginning of World War II in 1941.
