Childhood of rhymes and Stories

Recently while viewing the Rhymes and stories on KIDSHUT, m thoughts wandered on childhood and now and the lessons we got from it. I chose the simple two here.

“If you are happy and you know it”

As a small kid I felt it was a wonderful rhyme with lot of energy and things kids like to imitate and enjoy. Which child does not feel happy to clap, jump or to stamp feet. This rhyme was full of energy and had all ingredients a child would love.

But when I grew up the meaning changed for me. When we get into competitive world and lost in the fast track of life we loose the child in us and hence forget to celebrate the things that bring happiness to us. As a child we celebrate every small wins and we also show our happiness. But as we grow we tend ignore to celebrate and express our happiness. The happiness a child feels and expresses when it gets a toffee is far more than a man’s happiness when he gets a salary hike or a promotion. Its just because people have lost the express and bring out the child in them. Imagine if everyone decides to express their happiness and start celebrating how energetic this world would look like. And this happiness is a contagious thing it can bring smiles on people around you too. So why don’t all people take a lesson out of this Rhyme and show their happiness. So first thing is to find happiness and then certainly to celebrate it.

Won’t this small change in life bring a big change in world…………………….. FOR HAPPY WORLD.

The Thirsty Crow

This childhood story is one of my favorites. I have listened this story hundreds and thousands of times and also repeated same to my daughter. In this story the thirsty crow overcomes a tricky situation of small mouthed bottle/pot with little water at the bottom. It drops pebbles to get the water level up by dropping pebbles and increasing the water level. And drinks water and flies happily.

This simple story tells us there is no problem which can not be solved. Given a little thought any damn problem can be solved all we need is to spread our wings of imagination. When things get tougher just think of this ‘Thirsty Crow’ and I am sure you will find a way out of it. I love some newer versions of the Thirsty crow too.

Kids Rhymes and stories are not just for kids its for all and apart from learning language there are multiple lessons one an take from these.

Do not blindly forward it…

Friends,

You have heard of grapevine, gossip and rumour right? And did you think you were not the one who would easily fall prey to those? If someone told the boss is having affair with his PA you are least bothered, If neighbor said the guy living upstairs might be a terrorist you did not blindly believe her. But now when it comes to internet you just forward each and everything thing which sounds interesting or never heard of.. right? why is it?

articles2read.com
articles2read.com

Some one forwarded a photo telling Congress is making a Yaga to invite aliens, everyone forwarded it in whatsApp and laughed at congress. But they never realized they were such big fools to believe the news.

Then there are many forwards which ask you to forward the message to ten people and you will get auto-recharge, or the picture will change, so on and so forth. I agree you want to test it, ok test it, but how many of you ever go back and send a message that it did not work? At least that way everybody realizes such things wont work.

The biggest fraud of all is forwards like ‘Telegram’ is an Indian messenger application and Modi asked to install it. How many so called software engineers forwarded it!! were you also one of them? You were rather marketing a foreign product which was not even as good and safe as whatsapp!!

Jokes making fun of women, and even women forward it!! I am sure now why the half of the world considers women as Dumb.

There is this video of a girl singing a nice Hindi Song. Neither the name of the girl, nor her city nor the senders information is there in the video. But everybody is requesting to forward that video telling it will help the girl get publicity. Now I wonder how many men with ill will approach her promising her of bright future and misuse her innocence!! If somebody really wanted to help, he or she would have given their contact details so that the people wanting to help would have had a point of contact.

Forwards like – Today you will see many moons, or there will be no light for 48 hours, sun will disappear etc are so hilarious. Whatsapp works on internet, Facebook works on internet why not just Google it out and confirm before forwarding?

Kids lost, or kids found, blood needed all these forwards have some good will behind them, but make sure to add some date, name of place etc so that when it goes on circulating around the world through out the year or years, someone will cross check and find out if its relevant or not and stop forwarding.

Friends forward a joke, forward inspirational quotes, forward all good things. Before you forward anything, just make sure the information you are sending to the world around there is true, helps someone and important of all does not harm anyone!!

My Porcelanosa house would be

Most of the time the word Dream is followed by Dream Home, Dream Girl/Boy and Dream Job. Among these three also Dream Home is something which every one dreams about. People of all ages from Children to Old ones, people of all countries, Rich or Poor, Educated or Illiterate everybody dreams of his or her dream home at least once in his or her lifetime.

When we moved from a small town like Shivamogga to a big city like Mysore in 1985, how excited I was about our new own house. I was so thrilled. I was only a small girl then. But I was little disappointed when I saw the house. At that age I could not understand that owning a house in a city like Mysore itself is a great achievement. I had dreamt of very big house in my imagination. As there were no Digital Cameras or smart phones at that time, my father had not shown the image of house to us! I was too naive to understand its area by listening to the measurements. So my imagination and the real house did not match. But after a while I was happy. We had enough space to grow flower plants and vegetables. So much wind and light. We could climb on the terrace with a ladder which we could not in Shivamogga as it had a roof made of Mangalore tiles. Then even that house became bigger when I was in High School. I had my own room in First floor. I loved to spend most of the time there.

So that is Past now and we are building our own house now, and understand what it means to own a house, plan every inch of the house, get finance, make adjustments in our life style to complete our dream home. To avoid any disappointment to my daughter I ensure she is present in almost all moments of our Dream home in making. So she knows how big it is, where it is, which is her room, How big is her room and so on.

But somewhere I was not really satisfied with the size of the house again!! With Real Estate booming like anything the prices have shot up like Rockets. And I wonder whether my house will be even as big as the house in which I lived from high school days till marriage! But I found a solution. I felt that it is not the big rooms or number of rooms that matter, it is how you design them. The interior design, the walls, the paint the wardrobes, the windows and the curtain and the furniture and our love towards our house and people living in it. That is what makes a dream home. Love is in abundance so no need to worry about it. All I need to worry is planning the walls, the roof, the floor and Kitchen, shelves, bath room tiles and so on. Here I found some virtual solution to my real dream home. 🙂

Here is a topic from Indiblogger and 24living which says  Pick as many items as you can from Porcelanosa to build your dream home. Tell us why you chose them and why”.

Let me start choosing and see how my dream home turns out to be. Good thing Porcelanosa did is that it has mentioned price in its catalog. So no constraints, let me choose the best one for my dream home!

Ours is an independent villa which is under construction. I would like to have some Sit out arrangement in front of the house as we have more space left in the East Side, which is the Entrance. This is how it I want it to be

Porcelanosa
Porcelanosa Tiles

So I am choosing Dublo Beige Structure for the outdoor flooring. I selected it as it looks rough and it can stand the attack of water from rain and sun shine from Sun. 🙂 Also it is not slippery. Children run around and make lot of fun in out doors and its just suited for that.

I would choose Par-Ker Oxford Antarcita for the Terrace flooring. As we would be spending most mornings and evenings on Terrace. I spent most of my study hours on our Terrace when I was a student.

terrace tileFor Living room I would choose Madagascar Marron. I chose this color because I am very nostalgic about the house where I was born and brought up. Till 1990 we had the Cement flooring which had Red Oxide painted on it. The floor would shine more and more as we would mop it day after day!! The tiled floor never looked so clean and appealing to me. This Maroon colored tiles in the Porcelanosa catalog really matches with my imagination.

living room marronHere is something unique for my Kitchen. I always dreamed of something like this. Most things get lost in big shelves, hence I want to have as many small units as possible so that everything is at my reach. Just look at this.

kitchen porcelanosa

Now let us see what I buy for my bathroom. Here it is

bathroom porcelanosaThere is much more to choose from Porcelanosa. This is enough for the time being.

Friends I am writing this post for Indiblogger’s Happy Hours. But I hope my dream home comes somewhere near to the dream home described here. Thanks for reading.

Subhiksha Orphanage

Charity has become a way to earn money for various people. Thus its difficult for the common man to identify genuine helping hands from those which act like genuine but on the other hand just fool people. Thus it is good to share news about actual existing Orphanages, old age homes and other Social Service oriented establishments so that people who would like to donate or be a part of it can be made aware of such entities. So I thought of sharing news about Subhikhsa Orphanage. Came across it in TheHindu newspaper and after that collected more information from net.

The news I read about was Subhiksha orphanage, but what I found on net is this. Hope both are same. Visit their website on www.Subhiksha.org

Healthy Children make happy families.

I am writing this post as a part of Indiblogger’s campaign “Happy Hours”

Dance to the music
Dance to the music

I had never ever thought how much of panic parents will have when their child becomes ill, until I became a parent and felt so helpless to see my daughter suffer from fever or cold once or twice in a year. Children are like the power generators of the house. If they fall ill, the whole energy of the house will be lost. Because with children around every day is like a celebration, and if your son or daughter is ill and cannot eat sweets or dance to the music, what will you celebrate or how will you celebrate or why will you celebrate.

This Diwali just because my daughter got some cold and cough, I have not made any festive food as it requires some ghee, sugar or deep frying which will make her condition worse. Instead if me or my husband were to get cold or cough or even fever, we wont mind preparing the festive dishes just for the sake of daughter. Don’t we? Thus there is no doubt that Healthy children make happy families.

But of late I have been realizing that its just not enough to concentrate on child’s health, even parents should always take care of their health because if they fall ill, they will not be able to keep the children in their full spirits.

Weather it is a family of three people or five or ten people, the children’s health does affect the mood of whole family. Grandparents would enjoy all celebrations irrespective of their health, as the radiance from child’s eyes give them divine energy. I have seen how my mother is full of energy when we visit her during holidays. From where does she get all the energy to prepare different type of dishes as per every one’s choice, how she manages to do all rituals to the grand children which are due on festivals and birthdays. But if the child falls ill, the whole celebration mood is lost.

We would always be arguing with children to change the TV channel as per our choices, and keep telling them you have seen enough. But when the child falls ill, even the TV is available for us 24 hours a day, we hardly feel like putting it on. Nothing would matter more than the child’s recovery.

Thus definitely children are the center of our aspirations, dreams, and ambition. To boost that energy of family, children need to be healthy and giggling around. Its children who keep us get going and aim higher.

To keep them healthy, let us avoid all junk food, unhealthy food habits and make them also realize the benefit of health and let us all adopt a healthy lifestyle for the sake of our children, for the sake of our families.

Thanks to Indiblogger for giving nice topic in Happy Hours.

Fantasy park Mysore

GRS Fantasy park is an amusement cum water park in the heritage city of Mysore. Situated in the not so densely populated city, compared to Bangalore, GRS Fantasy park is a best place to enjoy your summer holiday with friends and family. You can click on the link to visit their website where you will find all details about the park and also buy tickets online. Mysore being my hometown I am always there during my summer holidays. And my daughter makes sure that we will take her to GRS Fantasy park even if it happens to be a short duration trip to Mysore. And nevertheless we too enjoy all the rides like kids.

Best thing would be to reach there by 11am. Take a pair of clothes to change after visiting all water games. You can either choose to go for water games first change the dress and then go for dry games, or go to dry games first and then for water games. You will not be allowed in dry games or rides if your dress is wet.

Everytime I go to GRS Fantasy park I am really amused to see old ladies in the age group of 60-70 trying all the rides with their family. I see some grand mothers happily enjoying the rides which I myself am not able to do.

Good thing is you have rides for all tolerance limit. If you want to adventure go for the high speed ones, if you just want to relax and enjoy take the ones which are not so scary. And dont miss the Dragon”s Den.

Important things

  1. This should be a whole day event, so don’t go there if you are having less than 3-4 hours
  2. Go with a company, don’t go alone, you wont enjoy much. Still you can enjoy if you become one among the crowd.
  3. You can take lockers on rent, you can take swim suite on rent.
  4. Enough number of clean wahrooms are available.
  5. Food is not great, still there are 2-3 restaurants inside.
  6. Dont go to the lazy river if you dont have much time. That should be the last option.
  7. check the timings in the pamphlet given at entrance and be at those places at the mentioned time to experience thrill.
  8. Separate ladies and children pool is there. This you can use if yours is only ladies gang. Else you go to common family water pools.

If you have visited GRS Fantasy park, let me know your favorite rides in comment please.

NIMHANS Advisory on Child Abuse

Dear friends,

You may be a parent, an employee or an employer. It is very much important that we are aware how to tackle situations like Child Abuse, if it happens around us.

Child Abuse
Child Abuse

Here are some guidelines by NIMHANS Bangalore.

National Institute of Mental Health And Neuro-Sciences has sent an advisory to schools, parents, police and media to enable them to deal with a case of child sex abuse, in the right way.

Many a times, schools and parents do not know how to deal with Child Sexual Abuse (CSA). The result is delayed complaints / no complaints, destruction of concrete evidence unknowingly, not caring for the identity and dignity of the child enough, insensitive media coverage etc., which come in the way of delivering justice and to the traumatised child and family and getting their life back on track.

National Institute of Mental Health And Neuro-Sciences (NIMHANS) has prepared an advisory which has many important points to be taken care of by everyone.

Need for a child-centric response to CSA

The continual reporting of child sexual abuse (CSA) by media, in the context of many recent events raises the challenge of how to tackle the national menace of this ‘silent violent epidemic’. A critical aspect of child protection, also a child public health issue, CSA warrants systemic approaches that are uncompromisingly child-centric.

Part of this has to do with preventive programs in schools and other childcare agencies. Focus on prevention has the potential to reduce sexual victimization and even sexual offences in the general population. However, when an event occurs, it is addressed by systems of criminal justice, police, schools, families, and healthcare, which generate a flurry of incoherent activity, albeit in good faith, thereby compromising the child’s best interests.

The major emphasis of these activities are directed towards the child ‘victim’ through enquiry, interrogation and intrusive detailing of the event to verify it and then bring the perpetrator to book. The balance between the need for justice and empowered rehabilitation of the child becomes precarious. There is thus an urgent need to develop a protocol-based systemic response ensuring that the child’s agenda i.e. healing and recovery, is at the core of it.

Over the past year, the Department of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry at NIMHANS has received several children with CSA issues. When they come for help, they are extremely overwhelmed after visits to the Child Welfare Committee, police station, the hospital; by then, the child has been subjected to questioning on multiple occasions and therefore to re-traumatization.

There are many areas which have to be systematically addressed namely, the child’s reaction to the abuse, ensuring the child’s immediate safety, medical and mental health needs of the child, the concerns of the family, including social stigma. On the other hand, there is a sense of urgency to in legal procedures. Towards this, there is an understandable emphasis by the police on evidence and enquiry processes and related pressure from media and civil society, raising questions on the timely nature and effectiveness of these processes.

What a child-centric response entails:

Based on our experience, NIMHANS believes that planned, protocol-based, comprehensive and sensitive care should be provided at all stages of intervention to victimized children. The primary goal is to create a system of investigation which is child friendly and in accordance with principles of child rights and protection.

Where can families go for help?

  • Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2013 (POCSO) mandates that the child be provided with emergency medical services (EMS) within 24 hours of filing the FIR. EMS are provided by state Registered Medical Practitioners (RMP) in government hospitals (Vani Vilas and Indira Gandhi Institute of Child health) and only in absence of such an agency should the child be referred to other sectors. Where the Special Juvenile Police Units (SJPU) work in collaboration with government hospitals, the detailed enquiry can be completed in one sitting rather than the child being interviewed multiple times.

  • Once the medical examination is done and there is medical evidence, what the Dept. of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, NIMHANS can offer is combined therapeutic and forensic interviewing to assist both the healing of the child and the necessary justice processes. This interviewing is done based on existing international protocols which are child-sensitive and can stand the scrutiny of court procedures.

In children with symptoms, we work through trauma by encouraging expression of feelings regarding the abuse, validating experiences, and teaching personal safety. In very young children, this is done through art and play work. We offer social interventions in order to help the family cope with the consequences of abuse, also facilitating liaison with the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Centre for Child and Law (CCL) and legal aid services as necessary.

  • It is important for parents to not ignore or undermine a child’s statements and innocuous remarks. When in doubt it would be prudent to corroborate the information from various sources. An open, supportive stance, assuming a position that child is right would be helpful to facilitate further disclosure on abuse. It would be judicious to err on the side of caution especially in face of long term consequences of CSA. It is also important not to blame the child. The support given by the parent helps in facilitating better healing of the victimized child.

School’s response

Preventive workshops, personal safety workshop, life skills education can help as preventive strategies. However, when an incident takes place the system should have a clear protocol for response. This protocol should entail the following:

  • Whether the CSA incident occurs within or outside the school premises, by school staff or others, especially if a child reports to anyone in the school, the school’s position must be one of acknowledgement and involvement.

  • Every school must have a pre-set response plan which should include:

    • An identified person (known to the children) who can respond in a sensitive and gentle manner to alleged instances of abuse reported by the child.

    • A next-level reporting authority (such as the principal) who will inform the parents.

    • The school should guide and make available to parents the first level medical and other facilities to seek assistance (described above).

  • Unless the school has a trained counselor or CSA expert, it should not attempt to interrogate the child. This needs to be done by trained experts, preferably in child mental health agencies such as NIMHANS or accredited comprehensive child response units.

  • The school needs to take a proactive stance with the concerned parents and other parents. They may also need to be alert to the impact on other children and get appropriate experts to do de-briefing as necessary.

  • Furthermore, preparation needs to be made to receive the child back to the school in natural and non-stigmatizing ways so that the child re-integrates comfortably.

Police involvement

  • In the immediate aftermath of trauma, when there is non-availability of a trained person within the police forces for sensitive interviewing of the child, they need to refer to an expert in agencies such as NIMHANS, where forensic interview protocols are followed in the context of  healing interventions.

  • Police need to be cognizant that interview processes involving children cannot be hastened as it can exacerbate the trauma and be detrimental to the child’s well-being. For instance, taking a child back to the scene of crime and asking him/her to explain/demonstrate what happened, causes the child to relive the trauma and could interfere with recovery; also, such pressure on the child is less likely to elicit accurate information.

  • They need to understand that there are robust acceptable methods of gathering forensic evidence to meet the immediate legal ends.

Media – good practice

Media should be proactive in responding to crisis in ways that instill hope and confidence in the public versus fueling cynicism as the latter may only serve to increase the child’s trauma, and the family’s fears of social stigma.

  • The media must protect the identity and privacy of the child. This includes allowing and enabling the family to pursue due medical and legal processes without heightening their trauma by repeated and sometimes intrusive queries.

  • It would be helpful for the media, at the time of query/ reporting, to assist the family with information about where medical, mental health and legal, paralegal services is available.

  • Reporting on CSA could emphasize systems and treatments available for assistance, and strongly present the child’s entitlement to healing. This can be done by providing an on-going feedback about recovery and rehabilitation of the child.
